Architecture+ is a full service Architectural design firm that specializes in renovations, residential new construction,commercial building design and the adaptive reuse of older buildings. We are headquartered in North Charleston with another Island Studio office on Johns Island.We believe that architecture must be durable, functional, culture-based and be responsive to each individual character and to the desire of each individual client.Our goal is to provide quality architectural services and to harmoniously improve our built environment one structure at a time. Each of our projects, whether set in the heart of an urban center or a peaceful, low-country landscape, reflects the special character of its setting. Our artistic vision, technical skill and attention to detail are the foundation of this firm. A strong sense of stewardship for the environment, our community, and our client’s dreams continue to inspire our work.We are registered architects with licenses to practice in the state of South Carolina, the state of Colorado and the District of Columbia. We are members of the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Society of American Registered Architects ( SARA), the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) , the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). We are licensed in South Carolina, North Carolina, and several other States, and hold a national and international registration capability. Our firm has over thirty years of valuable experience in the design of high-end custom residential structures as well as commercial business and retail buildings, including the adaptive reuse of older buildings.
Tim Hilkhuijsen + Principal/owner
Tim Hilkhuijsen holds a Bachelors of Science from Southern Illinois University and has 25 years of experience in the field of architecture. With a strong knowledge of both residential and commercial methods, Tim’s ability to see a project through from conception to completion is unsurpassed, as he has been involved in the architecture design sector since 1989. His work can be seen throughout the South Carolina low country on the islands of St.Kitts, Antiqua, Kiawah, Seabrook, Spring, Edisto, Isle of Palms, Dataw, and Daniel. Time has also designed projects in the states of Utah, Colorado, Missouri, North Carolina and Texas, as well as in his native country of the Netherlands. His distinguished work has been published and can be found in various books and magazines for which he has received several local NAHB “Prism” awards for creative design. Tim also holds a current membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and currently serves on the national board with the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA).
Having a spirited understanding of accrual management, Tim has owned, operated and directed several Architecture Firms throughout his career, and is also regarded to be one of the top sought after Architectural designers in the South Carolina low country. His primary goal has always been to be customer service and satisfaction oriented and prides himself to be judged for the quality of his last job. “If we don’t take care of our customers, no one else will.”
As a member of the American Institute of Architects as well as the Society of American Registered Architects, Tim and his partner, Kevin Whalley, established Architecture Plus SC, LLC in January of 2012. The team at Architecture Plus also provides unparalleled 3D modelling and rendering services to their discriminating clientele to aide in the visualization of their projects.
Tim was born in the Netherlands and has lived in Nigeria and Indonesia. He is fluent in the languages of Dutch, Afrikaans, and English. His family immigrated to the United States in his early high school days, and they are now proud citizens of the USA. Tim’s father recently retired after serving nearly fifty years in the international helicopter business.
Tim married his wife in 1989. Anne is a special needs certified educator and a highly regarded teacher. She has been employed by the Charleston County School District since 1988. They have two children; Hans and Becca. Hans and his wife currently reside in North Carolina and Becca Resides in Charleston and is currently a registered EMT.
Kevin whalley + principal architect/owner
KEVIN WHALLEY, AIA, NCARB, SARA, has more than 34 years experience as a licensed ARCHITECT in design and construction. As both a Nationally Registered Architect and previously as a Licensed Residential Builder, Kevin has extensive design and construction experience. His work can be seen extensively in Charleston since 1989, where Kevin has been responsible for over 420 custom home projects and several commercial office buildings. The value of this work is above 225 Million dollars. Kevin and the previous firms he has managed have been recognized with over 30 local and national awards for both Architectural Design and Construction excellence.
In 2013 Kevin joined Architecture Plus and together with his partner and associates have completed many new custom homes and commercial projects in the tri-county area of Charleston.
Kevin’s earlier work from 1978 -1988 were completed in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mexico, was completed as a principal /Owner at Kevin Whalley AIA and Associates in San Antonio, Texas. Clients during that time frame included the City of San Antonio, City of Converse, and the City of Live Oak. Awards received during that time frame included recognition from the City of Converse for outstanding construction administrative service.
Kevin’s past and present philanthropic and civic activities include: Kiawah Island’s KICA- Maintenance and Repair committee, previous board member,Sea Island Habitat for Humanity, previous Board Member; American Institute of Architects; CRAN Steering Committee, previous board Member; Trident United way, previous committee member, National Home Builders Association and Charleston Trident Home Builders Association, previous board Member; Boy Scouts of America, previous scoutmaster and board member, Anchorage plantation architectural review committee; previous Chairman and has served on other community Architectural Review Boards.
Kevin’s architectural design work has been published in several local and national magazines’ including; Better Homes and Gardens, Charleston Home and Design magazine, Charleston Post and Courier, and Kevin has lectured for the Kiawah Island Community Association; on Natural Habitat site design and conservation techniques.
Kevin participates in several independent community, philanthropic and private design projects and consults professionally as his time permits.
Kevin has been married for 37 years to Cindy Lou, and she was a registered Nurse for 33 years, now retired. They have two grown children; Mrs. Sarah Ashley Lang and Andrew Ellis. Both children are college graduates with a master’s degree in their respective fields in Aerospace and Computer engineering. Sarah is married to Jared Joseph Lang who is also an Aerospace engineer and they have one granddaughter ; Madison Ellis Lang, residing in los Angeles,CA. Andrew resides at Pawleys Island, SC.
MOLLY PARK
Originally from Seattle, Washington, Molly moved to Charleston in 2006 and attended Clemson University where she received her B.A. Architecture with a focus in financial management in 2020. She is currently working towards her March at Clemson and licensure. In addition to Architectural design and 3D project modeling, Molly will also provide our clients with Interior Design and selections services.
Aaron ede + Associate
Aaron Ede holds both a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in painting from The University of South Carolina and a Master of Architecture from The University of North Carolina – Charlotte. Aaron has backgrounds in residential architecture & construction as well as commercial and public bid projects. Residential work can be seen on Kiawah Island, Daniel Island, I’on Community, Sulllivans Island and Isle of Palms. A member of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators, Aaron provides both traditional and digital visualization services to developers and architects. His illustrative work has been used for marketing and conceptual development across the southeastern United States, St. Kitts & Nevis and Antigua.
On October 16th, 2015, Aaron was awarded the Design Award of Merit “in recognition of superior achievement and professional design excellence for Project Renderings & Computer Graphics”.
Daniel Kim+ Associate
Born in California and raised in Virginia, Daniel received his B.S. Architecture at the University of Virginia and a Masters of Architecture from Clemson University. He brings experience in both, high-end custom residential as well as commercial projects. Projects he has worked on can be found in Texas, South Carolina, and New York. Shortly after joining Architecture Plus, he was put in charge of leading the firm’s 3D BIM division.
ALEX HOPPLE
Originally born in New York, Alex moved to State College, PA when he was 8, home of Penn State. After growing up there, he then attended Penn State where he received his Bachelor of Architecture with a Minor in Architectural History. He has strong interests in mixed use architecture with career aspirations in project management. Alex is currently working towards his licensure as well as LEED certification.
