  • What is Residential Architecture?

While the examples we have provided of our own residential architecture should give you a clue, we will still give you the official definition! Residential architecture is the design and building of residential properties like single-family homes, multi-unit residential buildings like apartments or condos, and can also include remodels and restorations on already existing single-family homes or multi-unit residential buildings. This type of architecture can also be referred to as domestic architecture. These structures are designed for families, individuals, and their pets. While providing shelter, protection, comfort, and everything one needs to achieve the basic functions of daily life, it can also offer the opportunity to work, enjoy agricultural activities, and more if you so choose. One of the best things about working with a firm that offers residential architecture like ours is that you can tell us exactly what you want out of your home and we design and create with that in mind. We make sure to give these wants and needs to our clients and we do so in such a way that creates the safest, most efficient, and perfect home for each individual customer. We can also see and offer options our clients might not have even thought about to give them a home even closer to what they have been envisioning all along.

  • What Do Residential Architects Do?

They are the individuals who you will sit down with and share and explain exactly what you want in your home. They will then turn around and take those wants and turn them into a reality. They will first create a drawn design that after potential edits and changes, will be turned into your dream home. Residential architects have the creative power to design your home, they also know how to work with and coordinate with everyone connected to getting your home built like contractors, making sure permits are attained and approved, and much more! Once a residential architect has presented their client with a design they are happy with, the build begins. We do recommend that you stay in contact with your architect through the whole process of building, as things can change, questions will be had, and they can't read your mind! Be available during this process! They will also be the ones who consider building your home as green as possible, your electrical and plumbing systems, your HVAC systems, and more. They think about these aspects in a much more individualized manner compared to a commercial architect who thinks about those things on a much larger scale. They will also be the ones to pick the materials your home will be built with and will be considering and adding things like landscaping, pools, water features, interior design, and much more for your home.

  • What To Expect From A Residential Architect

After you've met with a few firms and architects and you've picked the best one for you, it's time to get to work. Don't hesitate to be open and honest about what you want, the budget you're working with, and your timeline. Make sure you meet the whole team you're going to be working with to create a professional relationship with them. Before the design process begins, they will inspect the property they are designing for, and then get to work. We do recommend to be patient during the design phase, as it could take multiple designs to finally reach exactly what you want. Once that has been agreed upon, the designs become more in-depth. Permits will be drawn up, and your architect will make sure everything is designed and built to code, and that it abides by all local zoning codes and local planning committees. They will also help coordinate with you to find a contractor best suited to build your home. Once the home is being built, your architect will still be working from behind the scenes, making sure to help with any issues that arise and making sure their design becomes a reality while the contractor takes the reins.

We hope this initial information gives you a good idea about residential architects and residential architecture. We still have much more to share, but that will be in our next few blogs. Tune in next time to learn more and read about how to pick the best residential architect for you, some common misconceptions about having an architect build your home, and why an architect should build your home!
